Do you watch those commercials on tv? You know the ones – with a room full of ladies dressed in their yoga pants and clever tops, balanced on the left foot with the right foot tucked up against the left knee? And wished to yourself “Gee, I should try yoga… but I’m just not that flexible.”

Think again. We New Normal ladies* of a certain size can do yoga — and here’s how – thanks to Alight for their clever and colorful infographic.

There’s no disputing that yoga is good for us. It improves posture, fine-tunes balance, helps us focus, reduces stress, can ease arthritis pain, can reduce fibromyalgia symptoms — and the list goes on (including a few detailed in the infographic below).

Yoga disciplines aren’t all pretzel’y and bone-breaking. Yoga can be as simple as Hatha —a great place for beginners to start. Other yoga disciplines include calming and restorative approaches, exercise and stamina approaches, and range in difficulty from Hatha all the way up to Bikram —a strenuous and mind-bending yoga session performed in a very warm room surrounded by sweating participants.

Note: If you have health-related issues or a cardiac condition, check with your doctor before tackling yoga at any level. Express any concerns you may have —and ask them if you’re ready to tackle a beginner yoga session or two.
* and gents, of course!

Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

A shopping mall is extremely convenient with its huge parking lot, map of stores, and temperature-controlled corridors. But you don’t go to the mall for an experience.

While some malls are noteworthy, the vast majority are essentially carbon copies of one another. That’s why people still flock to high end urban shopping districts that have history, character and charm. In fact, the best ones in the world have become nearly as famous as historic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower.

Here we take a look at the 10 best shopping streets in 10 world-class cities and explore a bit about what makes them so special.

  1. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

For many, Rodeo Drive instantly brings to mind the image of Julia Roberts as Pretty Woman living out her shopping fantasies on Richard Gere’s dime. This street of designer boutiques is also the retail playground of Hollywood’s rich and famous, so a shopper’s experience is sweetened a bit by the distinct possibility of crossing paths with a celebrity out on a spree.

  1. Via del Corso, Rome

If you have any doubt about how well-loved this gorgeous Roman shopping street is, all you need to do is stand atop the world famous Spanish Steps and look straight ahead at the river of people streaming down Via del Corso. The best part of a luxurious shopping street in Italy is the fact that the shoppers themselves are nearly as impeccably appointed as the shops they’re frequenting.

  1. Oak Street, Chicago

When it comes to Chicago shopping, Michigan Avenue tends to steal the spotlight. But, in actuality, nearby Oak Street contains a much higher concentration of luxury boutiques, spas, hotels and restaurants. What makes this tiny corner of the Windy City so interesting is that most of the shops are housed in former residences on a quiet, tree-lined street. The intimate feel is a far cry from the bustle and crowds of the Mag Mile just around the corner.

  1. Fifth Avenue, New York

Besides being known as the most expensive street in the world, NYC’s street of shopping dreams is home to many flagship stores of the world’s biggest luxury brands like Gucci and, of course, Saks Fifth Avenue. It’s also achieved its international fame and status by being featured in several iconic films. Audrey Hepburn eating her Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Tom Hanks playing FAO Schwarz’s huge floor piano in Big are now part of the cultural lexicon, and every year thousands of shoppers flock to Fifth Avenue to see the famous locations first hand.

  1. Bond Street, London

Linking Oxford Street and the Piccadilly Circus in London’s West End, Bond is one of the most historic streets on our list. This high-end retail haven has been a shopping destination since the 1700s – the hustle and bustle of the street was even mentioned by Jane Austen in Sense & Sensibility. It’s also the location of Sotheby’s auction house, which lends the street even more distinction as a world capital of class and sophistication.

  1. Via Monte Napoleone, Milan

By many in the industry, Milan is considered the world capital of fashion and Via Monte Napoleone is the capital of that capital. As the premiere street in the Quadrilatero della Moda (fashion square), this street is essentially an open air art gallery for lovers of haute couture. And given the fact that many of the planet’s top fashion houses have their offices and headquarters here, shoppers are likely to rub elbows with the industry’s most influential set as they browse.

  1. Ginza Line, Tokyo

Asia is not nearly as well-represented on this list as Europe and the U.S., but Tokyo’s Ginza Line neighborhood is definitely on the same level as the other more established streets on this list. In addition to the flagship stores of luxury fashion brands, Ginza Line also boasts Japan’s most luxurious department stores and renowned tech stores like Mac and Sony.

  1. Avenue Montaigne, Paris

Like Milan, Paris is one of a very few world capitals of fashion, so there’s some debate about which street is, in fact, home to the best shopping in the City of Lights. But the 8th arrondisement’s Avenue Montaigne is the favorite of those in the know. Part of that status can be credited to the LVMH (Moët Hennessey Louis Vuitton) group, which influenced several other international brands to take up residence here as well.

  1. Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich

In general, the city streets of Zurich are impeccably clean and beautiful, but the Bahnhofstresse reigns supreme. With its internationally famous watch design houses, Swiss banks, and gourmet chocolatiers, this tree-lined street is much more than just designer fashion. And there’s just something about Swiss luxury that feels special and a cut above – so if you’re most at home in the lap of luxury, this Zurich gem is not to be missed.

  1. Laugavegur, Reykjavik

We decided to round out the list with an unexpected treasure. Iceland’s Laugavegur is the commercial and cultural center of the capital city of Reykjavik. What sets this charming and historical street apart is the bustling activity that accompanies shopping. In the summer, for example, a part of the street is closed to traffic and becomes home to lounge chairs, live music and climbing walls. And because of the large number of clubs and restaurants, the street thrives well into the night, long after the shops have closed.

Every major city has a shopping street or district that brings the city pride, but these 10 are truly worlds unto themselves when it comes to luxury and distinction. Visitors come away with far more than shopping bags—they take with them a unique and memorable experience that will likely outlast their purchases.

Here you’ll find legendary brands such as Tory Burch, Tod’s, Lanvin and The Four Seasons. accessorize-beautifullyWe’ve all read about how to use clothing silhouettes, colors and patterns to flatter our body type.  But how can we use our favorite fun accessories to look your best?  Can accessories really help you create the shape you want?

The answer is a resounding yes!  If you know a few helpful tips, you can use accessories to make the very most of your outfits.  It’s all about using extras to help direct the eye exactly where you want it to go. Read on to see how it’s done.

  • Belts

Belts are your best friend, regardless of your size or shape.  The right belt, worn in the right place, can do wonders for your body, and often makes a great outfit look even more polished and put together.

The key is to wear the belt at the narrowest part on your torso.  This is usually at your natural waist, which may actually be a bit higher than you think or where you wear your pants.

Stay at about one or two inches in width, and avoid too much embellishment in order to create a simple, slim line.  You can stick with the same color that you’re wearing for a monochromatic look or go for a fun contrasting color.

And don’t be afraid to wear a belt over a cardigan or blazer as long as you make sure the belt doesn’t cause any bunching underneath.

  • Heels

It’s common knowledge that heels can help you look and feel great.  But does that mean you always have to wear high-in-the-sky stilettos?  Thankfully, no.  Even a low kitten heel can do the job if you know a couple of helpful secrets.

Nude heels are a miracle in footwear.  Get a pair that matches your skin tone as closely as possible and it will become an extension of your leg.  Plus, they match absolutely everything, so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.

For shape, steer towards pointy-toe shapes that are equally effective at lengthening the leg.

  • Hats

We’ve talked about how to create longer lines with heels.  Now it’s time to learn how to do it on the opposite end.  Add height with beautiful hair accessories – they’ll draw the eye up and add a unique touch to any outfit.

Thanks to the likes of Kate Middleton, the fascinator is back!  They come in all styles, colors and shapes, so go for ones that match the style of the rest of your wardrobe.

Don’t forget how fashionable a hat can be.  Not so long ago women would barely leave the house without one. And before you say that hats don’t look good on you, do a bit of research into the shape that’s most flattering to your face.

Different face shapes are like different body types – they require different designs to look their best.

  • Handbags

Choosing the right purse is critical, because it’s likely that you’re almost always carrying it.  Make sure that you have one that flatters you by paying attention to a few guidelines:

  • Avoid cross body bags that create unnecessary lines or make clothes cling to areas you’d like to minimize.
  • Steer clear of purses in the same shape as your body.  Instead choose a contrasting shape like a long envelope clutch or, for example, if you’re heavier on the top, go for a bag that’s wider on the bottom and narrow at the opening.
  • Jewelry

Jewelry can be a great way to finish off your look in a flattering way.  Remember, it’s all about controlling the eye.  Create contrast with a rounder face by wearing long, linear earrings.

And for those who want to emphasize their lovely décolletage, choose a larger pendant that hangs just above where cleavage starts… that is, if you’re ready for admiring eyes to land there.

If your look is the simple monochromatic one, a bold statement pendant or layered necklace can be the perfect way to add some interest and draw attention to your beautiful face.

Everything you put on can and should be intentionally and strategically used to make you look your very best.  Don’t forget about these smart ways to use accessories so that you don’t miss a single opportunity to boost your style and your confidence.

Rainforest Paradise Maxi Plus Size Casual Dress

A mesmerizing mixture of fuchsia and green hues make a striking statement on this Rainforest Paradise Maxi dress … [More]

Price: 188.00

Why You Want This Dress

I’d go with this captivating color combination in support of my Inner Peacock — I love brilliant colors and blazing accessories. Pair this with something strong enough to stand up to the green and purple, but not gaudy enough to clash. For shoes, I’d go with plain colors rather than patterns – perhaps a stark white to offset the black bodice or a lime green to riff off the green waves of the skirt.

For jewelry, I’d go white and chunky – see how the model’s white earrings stand out? (That said, the orange of the clutch does stand out equally well — I’d even go with a larger bag in a similar color.)

Too Much Cleavage? Check This Out

A couple of the reviewers comment that the bodice is cut a bit low for some occasions. If it’s the gorgeous print that’s caught your attention but the cleavage is a bit too much, consider this alternative:

Rene Tube Maxi Plus Size Casual Dress in Rainforest Green

From casual beach chic to warm nights out on the town, our Rene Tube Dress is an easy to style staple you’ll wear all season long… [More]

Price: 138.00

Now, this one I would definitely style with white, blush pink, sherbet colors or jet black.

J Kara Beaded Godet Dress goes dressy and curvy with grace and style.

Plus size fashion tips

If you have a work party coming up, or you’re just meeting a few of the girls for a night out, you are sure to want to find an outfit which makes you look good and feel good. So why not pause your DVD or your game at FoxyBingo.com and check out our top fashion tips to help you flaunt your figure.

Dress for Your Shape

As a fashion fanatic, you probably already know which body shape you have. Apple-shaped women should try and draw attention to their slender legs and arms. A-line skirts and dresses which reach the knees will showcase your shapely legs.

If you’re a pear-shaped woman, you can emphasise your small waist by wearing a fitted top with bold patterns. This will also draw attention away from your hips and thighs. Choose flowing skirts to elegantly skim over your thighs and bottom. Jazz up your outfit with chunky earrings and bracelets.

Choose Dark Colors

For some reason, dark colors have a slimming effect. Shades like black, deep purple, rich navy blue and dark green are ideal. Use bright colors to draw attention to your face, shoulders and neck.

Stripes

Wearing horizontal stripes can make you look wider than you actually are. Women who are skinny or have boyish figures often wear horizontal stripes because it makes them look more curvy. If you’re curvy, try wearing vertical stripes to lengthen your figure and create a slimming effect.

ModCloth Fun Finds To Share!

The average American woman wears a size 14, which is the size cap for many US retailers. ModCloth is expanding their Plus Section to answer the call from their customers for a wider range of sizes on their site, and they’ve got the data to back it up!

“Our community is asking for more sizes, and we’re thrilled to provide them,” says ModCloth Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer Susan Gregg Koger. “No matter her size, shape, or style, we want to help every woman find designs that delight her and make her feel like the best version of herself.”

ModCloth conducted an online consumer survey featuring a representative sample of more than 5,000 U.S. women of mixed sizes ages 15-65. The study concluded that a large portion of the market wears sizes that fall into what the industry defines as both standard and plus sizes, showcasing how a large portion of the market falls somewhere between the two. Additionally, many of those women are avid online shoppers.

ModCloth’s Plus Size Survey Highlights:

  • More U.S. women report wearing a size 16 dress than a size 2 and 0 combined.
  • 33% of U.S. women wear a mix of what is considered standard and plus sizes.
  • 57% of U.S. women wear at least some clothing in sizes 16 and above.
  • U.S. women who primarily wear sizes 16 and above indicate that they buy over 50% more of their clothing online compared to women who only wear standard sizes.
  • Almost 1/2 of U.S. women who predominantly wear size 16 and above report having bought clothing online in the past 6 months, compared to approximately 1/3 of those who never wear sizes 16 and above.

Offering a full range of clothing sizes is not the only way the brand is aiming to satisfy the needs of this underserved community. ModCloth showcases a range of models who wear a variety of sizes, including recruiting their employees and customers as models in their creative campaigns. Also, inclusive site features, such as their Style Gallery invite community members to post their own outfit photos to share their looks with each other and, in turn, foster a community where all are welcome, regardless of size or personal style.

ModCloth hosted a pop-up shop event on Friday, June 14th, where customers, bloggers, and media were able to get a hands-on experience with the product ModCloth carries in a full range of sizes, a first for the non-brick-and-mortar store.
